Natural Hair Care: Daily Tip #7

Hello and welcome to our Natural Hair Care- Daily Tip Series by our friend Ms. Keianna owner of Chi Chi Sophistication Natural Hair Studio.

What a great tip!

I always have my combs at hand along with my Creme of Nature Leave In  and I rub oil (jojoba oil) on the palm of my hands before I begin to unravel each braid (or twist).

Always be mindful of the edges and try not to keep the same style for far too long.  (extremely fuzzy braids = lots of tangles and pulling)

Give your hair and scalp a break for at least a couple of days before your braid (or twist) your hair again.

Braid in different directions every time to prevent long term damage.

We hope today's Natural Hair Care Tip was  helpful!!  If you missed any of our previous Daily Tips, you can find them here:

Natural Hair Care: Daily Tip #6

Hello and welcome back!!

Ms. Keianna, owner of Chi Chi Sophistication Natural Hair Studio has this tip for all of us:

"What does it mean to use a Clarifying Shampoo?"

Great tip and thank you for sharing this important tip!!

It is very important to use a clarifying shampoo, especially when you use heavier products, styling gels or butters.   If you hair and scalp feels "slimy/sticky", then it's time to use clarifying shampoo.

And here is another tip:

When using a clarifying shampoo, consider doing a "Pre-Poo Treatment" before you shampoo your hair or follow your washing session with a "Deep Conditioning Treatment".

Shampooing while necessary, can dry the delicate strands.  Doing a treatment before or after the shampooing process will help with the retention of moisture.

We hope today's Natural Hair Care Tip was  helpful!!  If you missed any of our previous Daily Tips, you can find them here:

First Day of School!

Hello everyone!

Today was the big day for Ms. Bree, she is officially a First Grader!

Last week was a rough week for Ms. Bree and I.  Although the school year started on Thursday, August 6, 2015, Ms. Bree was unable to attend the first and second day of school.

During the last day of Summer Camp, Ms. Bree contracted a "tummy bug"! The high fever she suffered (103.7) lasted for two and half days.

Unfortunately, I missed my son's first day as a Third Grader but Daddy was there for him.

But I made sure I was there to pick him from school so that we could spend some quality time together.  He told me all about his first day as a Third Grader while we enjoyed some ice cream at his favorite place.

I can't believe he is a third grader now.  It's amazing how short this summer vacation was, and now a new school year has begun.

So, today was "Our First Day of School"!

Ms. Jones and Ms. Bree.

 Daddy and Ms. Bree

(yes! I forgot to write her excuse, so here I am in a rush writing her excuse)

We started the year with two simple cornrows on the front into a sleek bun.  I didn't feel like she needed to spend two to three hours getting her hair styled after she had experience such debilitating fever.

Therefore, this week she will wear her hair in a bun and we will condition and this weekend we will style her hair into a more protective style.

Quick Overview on Oils & Their Benefits

Natural Oils and Their Benefit

   Hello Readers:

                 First, I want to thank every single one of you who supports and follow our blog, Facebook Page, Twitter Page, Instagram Page and Pinterest Boards, it means a lot to us!!

                Now, this post will give a quick rundown on the natural oils that are popular in the Natural Hair Care World.  I could have written a very long explanation including the origin of all the natural oils you probably have come across.

                But I didn't.  I'm sharing with you my "To Go By List" or my "Cheat Cheat List" J  It's a summary of some of the hair benefits for the most popular oils.

(These are some of the Oils we have in our collection)

The list is in alphabetical order:

Argan Oil

*Strengthens the hair;
* It prevents dandruff, frizziness, early loss hair;
*It helps to retain moisture.

SIDE NOTE: Argan Oil has become very popular regardless of it's price.  This oil can be used not only for your hair, but skin and nails as well.

Avocado Oil

*Great for curly hair;
*Helps to moisturize your hair;
*Prevents Split ends;
*Revitalizes your hair;
*Improves shine and brittle hair.

SIDE NOTE: I highly recommend you purchase a small bottle to try on your curly strands. This oil is a bit heavy and it did not worked on my daughter's hair.  I was told that this oil works better on curlies who have tight curl pattern 4b/4c.

Almond Oil

 *It helps with moisture retention (great as a sealant);
*It prevents split ends;
*prevents early hair loss;
*it promotes shiny hair;
*revitalizes your hair and prevents heat damage by the use of blow dryers and flat irons.

SIDE NOTE:  You can also use this on your skin.  I've been using it along with Oatmeal Lotion to keep the kids' skin moisturized.  This oils has also become my make up remover and it keeps my skin nice and soft.

Castor Oil
Jamaican Black Castor Oil

 *Castor Oil promotes hair growth;
*reduces split ends and hair breakage;
*Helps with moisture retention
*Helps with dry and itchy scalp.

SIDE NOTE:  Castor Oil is thick and heavy but I mix mine with other oils which it thins it out making it easier to apply to her scalp and hair.

Jamaican Black Castor Oil as many of you already know is extremely thick because it is more concentrated and is use to promote hair growth.  I use JCBO every other day or every two days and I only apply it to her hair line.

Coconut Oil

* Shields hair protein;
*Great as a sealant;
*light oil that can be use by all hair types;
*It can promote hair growth;
*It can strengthen hair shaft.

SIDE NOTE:  I have been using this oil since the first day.  Although I may not use it as often during the cold months it remains my favorite oil.

Grape Seed Oil

*It prevents dandruff;
*It help to strengthen your hair;
*Helps to moisturize your hair and scalp;
*it promotes shiny hair.

SIDE NOTE:  I've just recently purchased Grapeseed Oil, I have not used it since we are experimenting with Almond Oil at the moment.  But one of our many mommies have mentioned the following:

*It can be used before blow drying or flat ironing the hair- this oil can protect from heat damage, by JWC;
*It can be used on your skin, specially if you have sensitive skin, by CS.

Jojoba Oil

* Promotes hair growth;
*It prevents dandruff and dry scalp;
*It can help with Eczema.

SIDE NOTE:  This is one of my favorite oils.  So many different uses, Jojoba Oil is part of my Oil Mix, I also use it on their skin.

Macadamia Oil

*Promotes healthy hair;
*It protects hair and scalp from damage;
*It helps with moisture retention;
*The vitamin E contained in this oil can help to soften the hair, give the hair shine and works wonderfully with those frizzies.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil

*It helps to keep hair healthy;
*It prevents dandruff;
*Helps with the frizzies;
*promotes shiny hair;
*It helps to soften the hair.

SIDE NOTE:  Add a few tablespoons to your deep conditioner or use it alone before your shampooing sessions and I promise you you will feel the difference! Your hair will be so soft and very manageable.    Just apply EVOO to your hair while detangling it with your fingers, place a plastic cap on top and let it sit there for 20  minutes or so. Wash and conditioned your hair and DONE!

Red Palm Oil

*This oil is rich in Vitamin A & E;
*It strengthens the hair and promotes hair growth;
*it is known to have antibacterial properties.

Well, that's all folks! :)

Many of you have asked what oils do I use when I say "My Oil Mix".. well in my bottles your will find:

On my daily bottle:

*Castor Oil (Coconut Oil for the warm months);
*Jojoba Oil
*Argan Oil
*Sweet Almond Oil

On my second bottle you will find Black Castor Oil with a pinch of Jojoba Oil.

Do you have a favorite oil that your hair and skin cannot be with out?  Please share them with us by leaving a comment :)

Frozen- 5th Birthday Celebration

Hello Ladies!

Wow, I can't believe my baby girl is not five years old!! Where has the time gone?  I remember when she was attached to my hip all the time.. wait, she still is! :)

This year my daughter is fascinated with the movie "Frozen", and her favorite character is Elsa.  When the time came to pick a theme in order to get ready for her big 5th Birthday Bash, I knew she was going to make me work.  But nothing could have prepared me for the ordeal I was about to face.

After visiting Party City, Michael's and Walmart on several occasions, I realized that I was not going to be able to buy anything in store since all decorations were sold out.

I was able to obtain the following items on Partycity.com;

Since I couldn't find much online either, (all items were out of stock), I had to come up with different ideas as to how to bring her "Frozen" Theme party to life, and here is what I did to do just that.

THE INVITATIONS:

Unfortunately, the blank "Frozen" invitations were sold out in store as well as online but I was able to find the above invitation on Etsy.com. Once I contacted the seller and provided her with all the required information, I had the file in my inbox within an hour.

I no longer have a color printer otherwise, I would have saved even more, therefore I had to send the file to OfficeMax to be printed.

If you have a color printer at home, then you will be saving about $10.00 to $15.00 depending on how many invitations you need.

THE DECORATIONS

The above pictures shows what our table looked like before the party started.

You will need the following:

1. Opa Opalessence Table Cover which can be found at Party City;

"Opalessence table covers have iridescent fibers which give them a lively rainbow-like glow. This tablecover features a predominantly white color with this same glow, is 2-ply (1 plastic and 1 paper), and measures 54" x 108" (about 40.5 square feet)."

Our Sparkling Mountains

1. Four (4) different sizes of Cone Shape Foams; I purchased these from Michael's.
I used two large and two mediums. (Below is a picture of some of the sizes you can use)

2. Two (2) Glitter Roll Wrapping paper, I also purchased the rolls from Michael's;

3. Glue Gun; regular tape does not work on this type of paper.

Our Candy Dishes:

I used four serving bowls for our candies.  Rock Candies were such a hit last year that I decided to have them again.  The fact that the Rock Candy Sticks have a ball handle, which makes them easier for little hands to grab and the sugar crystals look like glistening gemstones gave the perfect touch.

1 Caribbean Small Swirl Plastic Bowl (about 5.5 inches) with small White Gumballs;

1 Clear Medium Flared Bowl with medium size Caribbean Gumballs;

For the rock candy I used the following

2 Clear large flared cylinders (7.6 inches tall);
2 Glowing sticks;
1 Pack of Caribbean Blue Decorative Gems;
1 Pack of Clear Decorative Gems;
1 Pack of 8 Caribbean Blue Rock Candy Sticks; and
1 Pack of 8 White Rock Candy Sticks;

 Place the Caribbean Blue and Clear Decorative Gems at the bottom of the bowls;

insert one glowing stick in the center then place the Rock Candies in dish.

THE BACKGROUND

I used my son's blue curtains to cover the curtains that I currently have in my dinning room and carefully taped the Snowflakes strings from the top (slightly behind the curtain rod) in order to create a "snowing scenery".

     I could have used so more hanging snowflakes bu my Husband thought that was enough.

OLAF

Olaf, the singing and twirling snowman was given to Ms. Bree as a Christmas Gift.  Olaf can say different sayings including his famous quote "Some people are worth melting for"! I thought it would be a great idea for him to be part of my main table as a decoration and have him sing while the kids worked on the activities.

 The snowflakes I used to decorate the "cake stand" were actually Christmas Decorations Ms Bree picked to decorate Christmas Tree.
 They worked perfectly and I didn't have rush to find them because I had left them on Ms Bree's dresser.

THE BANNER

I must say that I WAS disappointed when I open the package containing the Birthday Banner.  Last year's banner was at least 7 feet tall and it cover the entire entry way to my dining room!

This banner was extremely small and I had to make last minute adjustments in order to make my foyer look a little more full.  Overall, it was okay but they could have done a better job with the banner.

 THE CAKE

The cake was another story.  I had told myself I was not going to bake her cake this year but when I went to Publix to order it, they didn't have it. Apparently they don't have a license to produce it and I couldn't find it anywhere else.

So, my dear husband helped and suggested that I do a winter cake and use her dolls!!  After that the wheels in my brain were turning day and night.

If you follow my posts you know that I have a very large Christmas Village, which includes "TREES", the very trees you see on the cake!

Elsa, Ana and Olaf came in a set that her daddy had given Ms Bree for as a Christmas Gift... see how Christmas saved the day!

It was a very simple cake but I think it did the job!

THE ACTIVITIES

"MAKING OLAF"

 To make the Olafs you will need the following:

1 Bag of Large Marshmallows;
2 Snack Size Bag of Carrots;
1 box of flat toothpicks
1 tube of Black Sparkling Gel (use to decorate cookies, cupcakes, etc.)

Note: cutting the baby carrots in smaller pieces are easier to use, unless the children was a "big carrot nose".

FACE PAINTING EVENT

The face painting was done by Ms. Alyson, she is a local artist and has been part of some of the most popular events.

She has done the kids' face painting on several occasions and her amazing painting abilities convinced me that she was the best person to have at our party.

"Spider Man"

"Butterfly"

"A Princess"

THE GIFTS

I normally would wrap her gifts in "princess" theme wrapping paper, unfortunately, I could not find any "Frozen" wrapping paper.

In order to match the theme, I used the following:

1 Caribbean Blue wrapping paper ($3.99) that I found at Party City;
2 Curling Ribbons (one in white and one in baby blue)
Flowers (2.99 for a pack of 12) and flower shape gems (3.40 for a bag of 100 pieces)I found at Michael's;

 Ms. Bree was truly happy not to only have her friends be part of her birthday celebration, but Grandmother and Papa were also there.

I had a lot of fun making all the decorations from scratch, although physically I was exhausted, my heart was full of joy because all the children had fun from beginning to end, Ms. Bree was very happy with every single thing, from the silver balloons to the simple cake Mommy made for her.

At the end, she was tired but happy, refusing to remove her face painting, she told her daddy
"Just hold me daddy, I love you but I'm tired"

Regardless to what the result is, children are always aware of how hard we (the parents) work to bring their dreams to reality and they truly appreciate our efforts.

THE END
