RECAP- Events and Styles

August 8, 2014

Hello Readers.. we truly apologize for the late posts but we've had some technical difficulties and we hope to be back on full force pretty soon.

In the meantime, I wanted to do a brief recap on Ms. Bree's latest styles and the use of new product by Creme of Nature Argan Oil Line.

School started on August 7th, 2014 for our children and Ms. Bree's back to school style was a very simple one.

If you missed our "Back To School Hairstyle"- You can see it here:

After a week of wearing her hair in pony tails and braids, it was time to let her scalp and hair line rest.  It is very important to remember to let the hair breath after a protective style,  the hair CAN suffer from constant protective style.

Therefore, I unraveled all her braids and pony tails.  The picture below shows the results.  A simple headband to keep her hair away from her face and DONE, she was all ready.

August 13, 2014

After a few days, it was time to wash and style it again.

I decided to use one new product:
Creme of Nature Argan Oil Strength and Shine Leave In Conditioner;

Our Moisturizer remained the same:
Bee Mine Luscious Moisturizer

And the oil we used to do this style:
Black Castor Oil

Ms. Bree wanted some "flowers" in her hair, so I used beads to accessories her style.

As you can see from the collage below, she fell asleep while I was styling her hair.  Which not uncommon, after a good wash and detangling session, she tends to fall asleep during the styling process.

August 18, 2014

After approximately 12 days, it was time to wash, deep condition and style her hair.  But I decided to let her scalp rest for a few days.  Her hair looked beautiful once I unraveled all the braids, so why not take advantage of that, right?!

August 30, 2014            September 3, 2014

As some of you may know, Ms. Bree is also a "dancer" and one of the many requirements is to keep her hair neatly gathered and away from her face during practice.

Since Gymnastic class was canceled this past Saturday, I decided that it was the perfect time to Deep Condition her hair, wash and style.. YES, it is a long process, and it can take approximately 2 to 4 hours.

And no, I know what some of you may be thinking.. I don't make her sit there for two or more hours at once.   Ms. Bree is only five years old and she is a very high spirited child.  When I deep condition her hair, I make sure I undo the previous styles and I make sure that the hair is also free of knots and tangles, I do this a few days or at least the day before I intend to DC.

I wash her hair, apply the deep conditioner and a plastic cap.  I let her play for 30 to 45 minutes then I rinse the conditioner out and then I start styling her hair.  We take breaks every 60 minutes.  There have been times when she sits and allows me to just finish the entire style by sitting quietly for 90 minutes.  But I always listen to her and her needs.

I used the following products to style her hair:

Deep Conditioner:
Bee Mine Beeutiful Deep Conditioner;

Shampoo:
Creme of Nature Argan Oil Moisturizing Shampoo;

Conditioner:
Herbal Essence Hello Hydration;

Oil:
Argan Oil, Jobjoba Oil and Coconut Oil Mixture

Moisturizer:
Bee Mine Luscious Moisturizer.

NOW IS TIME TO GET READY FOR SCHOOL PICTURES!!

Our Style for School Pictures....

      School Picture Day is one of those day I hate and love.  I hate them because as parents, we make sure that our little ones are wearing the perfect outfit and their hair is styled just the right way but more often than not, the results are catastrophic.   Their hair is out of place, the shirts or pants have grass stains because they have been outside playing just before the picture was taken or how about the "ketchup" stains... I remember when my son took his Pre-Kindergartner pictures, he had ketchup stains all over the front of his shirt! oh boy! that was interesting to see..

      I love picture day because it helps me keep better track of their they change over time.  However, the reality is, school pictures are one of the few pictures that we actually frame and hang for our family and friends to see.

      After our  first catastrophe,  we made sure he took an extra outfit, got a fresh haircut and we remind him to make sure to wipe his face while he waits in line for his turn.  Let's be honest, these are kids and we never know for sure how the pictures are going to come out until we receive the envelope in his school folder.

      After waiting approximately two to three weeks, I finally received the photos. I will be honest with all of you, I did "not" wanted to open the envelope because, I was expecting to see my son making "funny faces" or giving a "fake smile" or worst, a stained shirt or dirty shoes!

     But curiosity won, (curiosity always wins on my end) and thankfully, this year's pictures looked great!  My son didn't make any funny faces, there was no sweat around his face, no chocolate milk mustache, his face was clean, his shirt and pants were still looking good.

         Now, guess my reaction when I opened the envelope containing Ms Bree's photos and I saw the worst smile she has ever given.   Ms Bree has always been my photogenic child, always ready to strike a pose. Ms Bree has always enjoyed taking photos BUT this year, it was her turn to make the "funny face" and give the "fake smile" my son is famous for... I guess she lost the coin toss this year as to who would take the worst pictures.  Nevertheless, she still looked beautiful.

     For this years's school pictures, I decided to do "Half Cornrows & Two Strand Twists" and used an "old school" hair accessories, "Butterfly Hair Clips", don't they remind you of the 90's??  :)

     My little princess looked beautiful.  I believe this picture really shows how much she has grown in just this past year.

 "Half Cornrows & Two Strand Twists"

I used the following products:

*Bee Mine Curly Butter; and;
* Eco Styler Gel with Olive Oil;
* Goodys elastic bands

This was my first time using Eco Styler Gel with Olive Oil and I have to say I'm very impressed.  Her twists lasted a lot longer and were more defined than previous occasions.

     Now, I received a lot of questions as to how I do my two strand twists, how do I make them last so long and how do I do undo them.

    I did a quick video for all of you and I hope you are able to see how I do and undo them.

   I will try to make a better video next time I do twists.

Cover Page Beauty: Introducing Korrie Kelley

Hello lovelies...
Welcome to our Cover Page series... Today I am introducing you to an amazing lady who slowly transitioned and is now loving her natural hair!

Let us begin this wonderful interview, can you tell us your name and which state do you represent?
   My name is Korrie Kelley and I was born and raised in Mississippi!!!

How long has your natural hair been free of relaxers/texturizers or any type of chemicals? Did you transitioned or did you do a Big Chop?
    I started transitioning in June of 2011!
    I was too much of a chicken to do a BC (big chop) so I just started growing out my relaxer, and cutting the relaxed ends every two months. It was so neat to see the curls popping out all over my head! I had no idea what my curl pattern was! It was fun:)

Goodness, look at all that hair, I love the color, tell me Korrie, What made you go back natural?

   My cousin did the big chop a few years ago, and watching her hair come to life really inspired me! It changed her also..gave her a certain confidence that she didn't have before. I liked that!

We all know how important it is to establish a routine, what is your routine? how did you come up with it?

    Trial and error!!! A lot of Youtube watching and book reading. Kind of gathering different info, and then seeing what worked for me. My wash and go routine is pretty easy. I am a believer in sectioning my hair. I used to free fall it when washing, but the knots and tangles increased so I had to re-evaluate what I was doing. I started out sectioning in the beginning and had to go back to that. I co-wash every 5 days with either Tresseme naturals or As I am coconut co-wash.
    Right now I'm experimenting with several different products for my page, but I do have some favorites that are re-ordered regularly. Kinky Curly knot today is an awesome detangler/leave in, Kinky Curly curling custard is a must for my wash and go's. For sealing I use jojoba or sweet almond oil. I'm loving twist outs right now, and I really think my hair is growing because of it so my musts for those are the Bee Mine Curly Butter!!! IT IS AWESOME!!!!!

I love jojoba oil and it is not secret that I love BEE MINE Natural and Organ Hair products.  Tell us, what products are currently working for you?

      Tresseme Naturals has amazing slip, and it's my must have for a co-wash. As I said above the Bee Mine Curling butter! I'm in the process of getting and trying more of their products so stay tuned....

We all have experienced hair challenges at a certain point in this long journey, have you faced any challenges when it comes to styling your hair? How did you overcome them?

    In the beginning yes! I did not like the two texture thing with transitioning, it was a pain! Now, I've kinda gotten a good routine going. Learning to be patient and thoughtful with my hair..not rushing, pulling or snagging. TLC goes a long way!
Tell us, what is your favorite hair style? I love wearing my hair wild and free!

What is your "To Go" Style??

     My husband loves it like that and also, when I wear my hair in a low, romantic looking ponytail with tendrils framing my face and how can I forget, I love a high bun (pineapple)

At the beginning my daughter was not "in love" with her hair but her feelings have completely changed now, how do you feel about your hair now?

   I LOVE IT!!! I hate that it took me this long to wise up! I feel more confident, free..just plain ole me:) Best decision ever!!! Have this HUGE accessory to ROCK now!
I received awful awful hair tips, and I'm glad I didn't follow any of them, tell us, what is the worst tip anyone has ever given you?

    To be honest, I haven't gotten any bad tips. I really just do my own thing, and the people around me just love what I do :)

I remember, one of the best tips I ever received was from a stranger at a store, what was the best advise you have been given?

       Everyone's hair is different. Learn and listen to what your hair needs. It will tell you. That is so true too I have found. Also finger detangling! Being comb free for a year now!

Some of our readers may or may not know this, but you own a Facebook Fan page under the name of "Korrie's Korner"; what is the main objective of your page, and what inspire you to create it?
      My objective is to encourage women to embrace their naturalness and God given beauty. Since I was a teenager I always helped my friends with their hair, make up or skin care needs..just kind of grew from there. I love helping women feel good about themselves! It's my passion:)

Do you have any advice that you would like to share with our readers?

If you're thinking about going natural GO FOR IT! Be patient and to give your hair lots of love. It’s not about whether or not you have “good” hair. We all have good hair! Everyone is different and that is what I love. Be unique. Embrace your “youness”.

Thank you Korrie for this amazing interview, the fabulous tips and the beautiful pictures.  Your hair is beautiful!

Recap: This Month's Styles

July has basically come to and end!  Can you believe that??

I sure can't but a lot of amazing things have happened during this month and we are looking forward to the month of August.

Little man will start 1st Grade and Ms. Bree will start Pre-K!  It is a bittersweet moment but I cannot be any more proud that both of them have been accepted at a Magnet School.

With that in mind we thought we would give a recap of this month's hair styles.

Let's begin with one of our most popular styles which happens to be a very simple style as well.

How simple and beautiful was that??

This style can also be modified into so many others.  Keeping her hair banded minimizes any knots and tangles and of course stretches her curl pattern .

Daddy's Promotion Ceremony

Since it was Daddy's big day, I decided to do a Braid Out at Daddy's request.   He is a big fan of "natural hair" and truly enjoys seeing Ms Bree with her hair down.

JULY 4th CELEBRATION

WOW, Fros on the Fourth!  What an honor it was to have partnered with Baby Big Hair for Best of Fros on the Fourth Giveaway and how much fun it was seeing all the natural beauties rocking their "Fros".

Thank you to all the participants!

FAMILY VACATION

It is amazing how much the children grow in just one year.

Every year we take a "Family Vacation".  During this time, we just want to enjoy the kids and do a lot of fun activities with them.

I don't want to get up early or stay up late doing hair and with that in mind, I opted to do a cornrowed pony tail and small box braids.

With this particular style it was easy to keep her scalp and her ends moisturized and protected while we were catching sun at the beach as well as going down the water slide at the Water Park.

(NOTE: Before every trip to the beach or water park, I sprayed water, applied oil and then conditioner.   I then collected all the hair into a bun or two buns, tucking all the ends in to prevent the ends from drying.  I co-washed her hair and re-moisturized her hair concentrating on her scalp and ends)

I simply loved the versatility of this style.

One Pony Tail, accessorized by a beautiful Flower Clip courtesy of our lovely friend at Flowers by Fatima

Two Pony Tails, accessorized by two simple bows courtesy from our friend and neighbor at Mommasbows.

Just let it all down...

After all those trips to the beach and Water Park it was time to take down her protective style, do a Deep Conditioner and let her hair rest before re-styling it again.

I must confess that I didn't re-styled her hair before she went back to school.

Monday morning are always hectic for us, a quick pony tail was good enough.  The flower clip is another amazing creation by our friend at Flowers by Fatima.

Since it is really difficult to do her hair during the week, specially on those days when my son has Karate, I didn't have time to do her hair the night before, therefore I re-touched her pony tail and off to school.

Sometimes during school, Ms. Bree decided she wanted her hair down and took her pony tail down, when I walked into her classroom at the end of they day, I looked around looking for my child... I have to say I couldn't spot her.

This is how I found her!

We can surely say that July was our "Free Hair" month...

July 31, 2013!
