Natural Hair Care: Daily Tip #4

Hello and welcome back!

Our friend, Keianna Johnson is ready to share her Natural Hair Care Daily Tip:

"Reading hair product labels can be a daunting task, especially when uncle of determining what is good or bad for the hair.

When reading labels, the first five ingredients tell the truth of what the product is made of.  If Petrolatum and/or Mineral Oil are in the top five of the ingredient list, that product isn't good for natural hair."

Great tip, thank you Keianna for sharing!!

One of the first tips I was given when I started caring for Ms. Bree's hair (approximately 4 years ago) was to look for (as many of) these ingredients on the label:  Water, Shea Butter, Aloe Vera (juice), Oils (i.e. Almost, Coconut, Jojoba, Avocado, Castor, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Tea Tree), Honey and Vegetable Glycerin.

We hope today's Natural Hair Care Tip was  helpful!!  If you missed any of our previous Daily Tips, you can find them here:

Father's Day Gift Ideas

(our Affiliate links are included in this post)

Alright ladies, Father's Day is just around the corner... June 19th is only ten days away!

It took me a minute to decide what to purchase my lovely hubby for this special day.  He is a big fan of the Carolina Panthers (no booing please.... hahha) and his Carolina Panthers Jacket has seen better days.

When I say that his jacket has seen better days, believe me, it has.  The inside of the jacket has come undone.  I wanted to trash it but he refuses and every time this hideous jacket has manages to find itself in the trash, it miraculously appears back in the coat closet.   Now, we all know objects cannot walk as they don't have feet, so we all know how that jacket always finds its way back.

After browsing through so many amazing ideas from Amazon.com, Aloha.com, 1stinCofee, and other sites, I have found a few items I believe any father will love.

So here is the list we have compiled for you:

I wish I could share what our big daddy will be getting for Father's Day this year but if I do, it wouldn't be a surprise for him... just know that it has to do with the Carolina Panthers!

My husband loves receiving personalized items.  For his very first "Father's Day" I gifted him a personalized "Father & Son Footprints" image, which was framed in a beautiful cherry wood color frame and when our daughter was born, I ordered a personalized "Quilt".  The frame now hangs in our son's room and he uses that quilt and he also travels with it.

(see more click: Grooming &More)

I am considering obtaining this amazing bundle for hubby.  Since the kids have upgraded to the new Samsung and  I have taken over Ms. Bree's old Kindle Fire.  I think it's only fair for him to have his own.  What I like about this bundle is that includes the following:

  • Includes the latest Fire 10" Tablet with Special Offers ($229.99), Amazon Keyboard case ($99.99), Amazon Stylus ($14.99) and Nupro Screen Protector ($14.99).
  • Beautiful widescreen 10.1" HD display with over a million pixels (149 ppi / 1280 x 800). Rear and front facing camera.
  • All-new Amazon Underground, a one-of-a-kind app store experience where over $10,000 in apps, games and even in-app items are actually free - including extra lives, unlocked levels, unlimited add-on packs and more
  • Enjoy more than 33 million movies, TV shows, songs, books, Android apps and games
  • Create personal profiles, link two Amazon accounts to share books, apps and games, and set device usage limits for kids
  • Fast quad-core processor up to 1.5 GHz for quick app launches and fluid graphics

Hubby has been in a "clean diet" lately and I am very happy that he decided to be a bit more conscientious as to what he eats and drinks.

Make sure you browse through their products, Aloha has a a variety of Teas, Protein Powders, Greens, Vitamins, Snacks, Sweetners and Special Kits, all of which make a great gift for any Dad!
Ninja Coffee Bar™ Coffee Maker with Thermal Carafe

HoMedics Dual Shiatsu Massage Cushion

Our big Daddy spends a lot of hours in his car patrolling the streets or at his office completing paperwork.  I bought one of this Massage Cushion for him about a year ago and he loved it.  Now, I have never used it since he keeps it in his office but I do know that this bad boy works great on his lower back.

product information as shown on site: HoMedics® Dual Shiatsu Massage Cushion, 12 massage nodes move up and down the back for a relaxing massage, soothing heat, 2 massage styles (kneading for a deep massage or spot for a focused massage), 3 massage zones (full, upper or lower back), removable cover lets you customize the massage intensity, programmable remote control and integrated strapping systems fits most chairs.

But Father's Day is not only about our husbands.  Our friend and Author Kelly Greenawalt has something special for the "Grandfathers":

"It's almost father's day!! Is there a special Grandpa, Pop, Papa or Pawpaw in your life? Our children's book, Fishing With Pop, would make a fantastic gift from the little fisherman in your life. This book captures the magical connection between grandfathers and grandsons. It's a FUN read for little boys and old farts. It's available on Amazon here: "Fishing with Pop"

If none of the above gifts work, hey, you can always give him a "Gift Card" :

A Recap and This Month's Protective Style!

Hello my beautiful people!!

This is a recap of the last week of May.  I know, I know, I have been unplugged and "MIA" for a few days but it was good to just relax at the beach with our kiddos.  No phones, no Ipads... just lots of sun and fun with our children.

Well, May is gone, gone, gone and June has arrived!!  I can't believe school is officially over and summer vacation has started.

Although school was over on May 20th, 2016, Calvary Day Summer Camp program, which by the way is our children's favorite summer program, didn't begin until June 3rd.

Therefore, our kids had to spend a few days with Grandmother and Papa so that we could work and make the last minute preparations for our Annual Myrtle Beach Vacation.

Basically our children were only gone for four days (Sunday Night 5/22 - Thursday 5/26th) but it was far too long for this mama! They may try my last nerve but the reality is, they are all mine and I do feel a little bit lost without them.

This mama was supper happy when they arrived home late Thursday night.   Unfortunately, I was unable to accompany my husband to pick them up because our new puppies needed supervision.  Yes, wait until I share my "Boxer Puppies Post" with all of you!

Little man arrived back home just in time to receive a very important piece of mail.  We posted a quick video sharing the news on our Facebook Page.. click: HE MADE HONOR ROLL!!

I must confess that I do worry about him and his grades.  I see a lot of me in him when it comes to "math" and we did struggle a bit a couple of times through out the year.  While I have to learn how to "NOT" stress him and me about his studies, I am glad that we have established a routine for those nights when he has to be at practice and/or games.

Having a plan and putting that plan into action has saved a lot of headaches and his grades. Otherwise I truly believe his grades would have suffered at great deal.  Stay tuned because I will share tips and ideas on how we prepare them for the next school year and how we are able to have good grades even when they play sports three nights at week.

June's Protective Style

Because the warm and dry days have also arrived, it is time to style Ms. Bree's hair into a protective style.   This style also worked perfectly for our Myrtle Beach Vacation.

I used the following products in the following order (on freshly washed and conditioned hair):

Blended Beauty Curly Cake Shaker;
Creme of Nature Argan Oil;
Blended Beauty "Down & Out"; with
(a bit of) Eco Styler Gel with Argan Oil.

Using the Eco Styler Gel allows her braids to last a bit longer.  It also helps with a more defined "braid out" if she decides she wants to rock her hair out for a few days before restyling.

The practicality of this style is amazing.  I was able to easily co-wash and moisturize her scalp as well as her ends after every trip to the water park and beach.

TIP: Remember, it is imperative to co-wash and moisturize their curly tresses every time they spend time at the pool or beach. Too much sun and chlorine can be damaging to their hair.

Now, stay tuned because we will be sharing wit you our Father's Day Gift Ideas, Ms. Bree's Recital, Billy's 2016 Baseball Season, Our Family Adventures in Myrtle Beach, and we will also be sharing our tips on how to prepare them ready for the next school year!!!

Light It Up Blue for Autism!

Hello Everyone!!

March is officially gone and April is here!!

Today we are taking part of something special.

Every year, autism organizations around the world celebrate the day with unique fundraising and awareness-raising events.  Our children are participating in their school fundraising by dressing in blue for a $1.00 donation, all funds will towards "Heard Elementary Autism Program".

But why stop there!   Join us as we pledge along with thousand of others to "Light It Up Blue" #LIUB  and help us turn awareness into action.  Your gift, whether big or small will help change the future of every single child or adult who is affected by autism.

There is no doubt that your child has encounter children with autism at school, church or at the park, and if he has not, he probably will sometime in the near future.  Studies show that the number of children with autism are continuing to rise.

Sometimes our children don't understand what they see.  As parents, it is our job to prepare our children to face certain situations with empathy and understanding.

Need tips or help on  how to explain Autism to your young child?  Here is a colorful 4 Page Booklet on a PDF Format that can be easily printed.  Bridges 4 Kids: Growing_Up_Together.

In this world, it is imperative that we raise our children to be kind and supportive to others.  To truly see the person not their disability.

Use hashtags #LIUB to share your experience across social media and help light the world up blue this April!

Make Wash Days Easier by Using this item!

Hello Everyone!

A few days ago while browsing the Pinterest Site, I came across this great idea and you will probably wonder the same thing I did... "Why didn't I think of this?!"

As parents of curly kids, we are always looking for tips and products that can make "wash days" easier and less painful for the little ones.

Let me assure you that this IS one of the greatest things I've tried that actually works.  The investment value... are you ready?. 0.75 cents!

Pool Noodle!

As you may already know, the pool noodles come in different shape and size.
The wider the noodle the higher the price.

I purchased two different sizes:

Purple ($0.75 cents) and Pink ($1.49)

(Image found on Pinterest Board)

Now, your probably thinking.... "What? and I never thought of doing this because?"

Trust me, that was the same reaction I had, especially after I purchased the Hair Wash Tray from Amazon.com (see picture below).

While we made it work the first time and she was happy with the experience, it was difficult to use it again.  It became impossible to find the right angle again.

The tray is not meant for small bathroom sinks and to be used at a kitchen sink, you have to have the right chair that will give the right height for the tray to sit at a comfortable angle.

We decided to try both noodles in order to determine which was one felt more comfortable to her. And she was more comfortable with the purple one, "so much better mama".

Fortunately, the noddle is the exact same length as her tub and it was "locked" in place and didn't require something to keep it from sliding back and forth.

Therefore, we experience NO MESS AT ALL!

I suggest you give this a try!

First Day of School & Mommy's Blues!

Yesterday was our children's first day of School.

Ms. Bree started Pre-Kindergartner and Lil Man started First grade. I can honestly say that the children were excited and they promptly got out of bed, okay, it was not that easy, but it was not the usual struggle either.

Do you remember your first day of school? I personally can't remember any of them. If we are being honest here, my first day in first grade was about thirty years ago… phewwww that was a long time ago.

This school year, both children are attending a new school. When I realized the kids were no longer going to be attending a private school, I had a thousand questions and no answer.
As most of us know, the Public School System class size range from at least 22-24 children and it can be intimidating for someone who is used to attending a private school where the class sizes are of 8-10 students.

As the date approached, the kids were counting the days, hours and minutes because they were ready to go to their new school.  I was not as ready as they were.  Thankfully, one of Ms. Bree's friends from the private school is in the same class, and Lil Man's best friend is in his class as well.  Part of me knew that the transition was going to be smooth for them.

I walked out of my daughter's classroom and when I looked back, she was so at ease, at peace, in her new class that she didn't even think about the fact she was on new school grounds, new teacher, and 22 new classmates and prospective friends.

Ms. Bree is my youngest child but has always been a social butterfly.  I constantly worry about her because of her carefree nature and how petite she is.  I literally spent all day thinking, "Is she okay? will the teachers be watching them closely during play time?, Will she eat her lunch?"

Lil Man's class is on the other side of the school, a long way from Ms. Bree's, and to my surprise Lil Man walked into his class room with his chin up, greeted his teacher and found his seat and promptly went to work completing the worksheet that was placed on his desk.
He gave me a kiss good bye, and whispered "I love you mama, but I will give you more kisses after school".

My son, the one who was never too shy to give his mama good kisses, has finally told me those words no mother wants to hear… "no more kisses in front of his classmates". Although it made me sad, it was just another sign that he is growing up.

I found the above poem and I thought, "wow, how true", I then realized that while my kids were probably having a good time, I was the one having the hardest time with this transition.
While there are plenty of tips, guidelines, and books on how to prepare our children for their first day of school. As I parent, I need a guide too!  A "How to Cope with The First Day of School- For Parents".

After all, I'm entrusting the safety of my children to a new school, and new teachers.  Can we get a guide too?

How do we prepare for this day as parents?

#1: Be honest with yourself:  I often have panic/anxiety attacks when it comes to my children.  My tension levels are always high and I get so stressed that it really drains my energy and patience!   Knowing your feelings and your reaction to those feelings will help you plan ahead for the big day.

#2: Plan Accordingly:  I am known to be a planner, but that doesn’t truly alleviate me from the stress of the big event, but it minimizes the running around, and the screaming in my head.
      a.  Get uniforms ready for the week;   I actually had the children helped me with this task.  We selected a uniform for each day including shoes, socks and undergarments.
      b. Plan Lunches/Snack for the week:  The children and I made a list of meals and snacks they were interested in taking to school.  This can be very helpful when you do your grocery shopping as well.  Print a calendar, have each child personalized their calendar by coloring the page or by placing their favorite stickers.
     c.  Breakfast:  While my son is really good about eating breakfast, Ms. Bree has developed my bad habit of not wanting to eat breakfast.  We all know breakfast is the most important meal of the day.  Therefore I try to give her a light but healthy breakfast but she sees it as a "snack".  Instead of preparing a heavy breakfast full of protein which most likely is going to make her sleepy, I give her a snack bag with ten to twelve blueberries, a small "Dora" yogurt and a glass of juice.  Our other options are a granola bar, toast, cereal and/or oatmeal.

All of the above did help me getting them ready for their first day of school and will continue to make my mornings somewhat easy.  The steps made certain that I didn't forget anything and sent the children to school unprepared. But in no way did the steps minimize my fear.

Emotionally I was unprepared and did experience the "blues". But after discussing this with all of you, my loyal readers on our facebook wall, I came to understand that it is perfectly normal to have all these conflicting emotions, sad, fear, happiness, pride and a million other feelings parents experience when their children are reaching a milestone in their lives.
The key is to take time to acknowledge those feelings, understand that it is very common to experience them and that as parents, we must take the time to prepare ourselves for what is to come.

Once the children arrived home from school, they had so many stories to tell.  They told me from how much fun they had during recess and how many friends they made.  After reviewing their folders, the teachers have given them happy/green faces for listening and good behavior.  They came home with empty lunches, dirty uniforms and very big smiles on their faces.  I automatically wanted to kick myself for worrying so much, but the truth is and one of our lovely readers pointed out, if I didn't worry about my children then I wouldn't be a good parent.  Yeah, I'm a bit in the over protective borderline obsessive line but I love my kids, and their happiness and safety are always before my own.
