Natural Hair Care: Daily Tip #3

Hello my naturalistas!!

Today, Ms. Keianna, owner of Chi Chi Sophistication is sharing a very important tip.

It's very important to remember that braiding your curly tresses too tight can be damaging to your hair.

In some situations, braiding to tightly can cause a simple headache, tenderness on the area, redness of the scalp, however, there are very severe cases where the hair follicles are damaged  causing permanent hair loss.

The best way to prevent permanent damage to your beautiful curly hair, make sure you quickly loosen any tight braids, braid your hair in the opposite direction from your last style and make sure you don't ever keep your hair braided for far too long.

Missed Ms. Keianna's last two Natural Hair Care tips?? Easy, read them here: Natural Hair Care: Daily Tip #2 and Natural Hair Care: Daily Tip #1

Quick Updo Style for Today!

Good Morning Everyone!!

Ms. Bree 's style is a simple and quick Updo.   Perfect for days like this, when "time" was definitely not my friend...

Cornrowed her bottom half ;
and smoothed her front section;
Then brought both sections together into a simple small bun.

I didn't use any Bun Shaper Foam or sock, just carefully twisted her hair into a bun;
secured it with hair pins.

This style is only for the next couple of days.  I will fix her parts and finish the style this weekend!!

Have a wonderful day.... the week is almost over!!!

Make Wash Days Easier by Using this item!

Hello Everyone!

A few days ago while browsing the Pinterest Site, I came across this great idea and you will probably wonder the same thing I did... "Why didn't I think of this?!"

As parents of curly kids, we are always looking for tips and products that can make "wash days" easier and less painful for the little ones.

Let me assure you that this IS one of the greatest things I've tried that actually works.  The investment value... are you ready?. 0.75 cents!

Pool Noodle!

As you may already know, the pool noodles come in different shape and size.
The wider the noodle the higher the price.

I purchased two different sizes:

Purple ($0.75 cents) and Pink ($1.49)

(Image found on Pinterest Board)

Now, your probably thinking.... "What? and I never thought of doing this because?"

Trust me, that was the same reaction I had, especially after I purchased the Hair Wash Tray from Amazon.com (see picture below).

While we made it work the first time and she was happy with the experience, it was difficult to use it again.  It became impossible to find the right angle again.

The tray is not meant for small bathroom sinks and to be used at a kitchen sink, you have to have the right chair that will give the right height for the tray to sit at a comfortable angle.

We decided to try both noodles in order to determine which was one felt more comfortable to her. And she was more comfortable with the purple one, "so much better mama".

Fortunately, the noddle is the exact same length as her tub and it was "locked" in place and didn't require something to keep it from sliding back and forth.

Therefore, we experience NO MESS AT ALL!

I suggest you give this a try!

Cover Page Beauty: Introducing Korrie Kelley

Hello lovelies...
Welcome to our Cover Page series... Today I am introducing you to an amazing lady who slowly transitioned and is now loving her natural hair!

Let us begin this wonderful interview, can you tell us your name and which state do you represent?
My name is Korrie Kelley and I was born and raised in Mississippi!!!

How long has your natural hair been free of relaxers/texturizers or any type of chemicals? Did you transitioned or did you do a Big Chop?
I started transitioning in June of 2011!
I was too much of a chicken to do a BC (big chop) so I just started growing out my relaxer, and cutting the relaxed ends every two months. It was so neat to see the curls popping out all over my head! I had no idea what my curl pattern was! It was fun:)

Goodness, look at all that hair, I love the color, tell me Korrie, What made you go back natural?

My cousin did the big chop a few years ago, and watching her hair come to life really inspired me! It changed her also..gave her a certain confidence that she didn't have before. I liked that!

We all know how important it is to establish a routine, what is your routine? how did you come up with it?

Trial and error!!! A lot of Youtube watching and book reading. Kind of gathering different info, and then seeing what worked for me. My wash and go routine is pretty easy. I am a believer in sectioning my hair. I used to free fall it when washing, but the knots and tangles increased so I had to re-evaluate what I was doing. I started out sectioning in the beginning and had to go back to that. I co-wash every 5 days with either Tresseme naturals or As I am coconut co-wash.
Right now I'm experimenting with several different products for my page, but I do have some favorites that are re-ordered regularly. Kinky Curly knot today is an awesome detangler/leave in, Kinky Curly curling custard is a must for my wash and go's. For sealing I use jojoba or sweet almond oil. I'm loving twist outs right now, and I really think my hair is growing because of it so my musts for those are the Bee Mine Curly Butter!!! IT IS AWESOME!!!!!

I love jojoba oil and it is not secret that I love BEE MINE Natural and Organ Hair products.  Tell us, what products are currently working for you?

Tresseme Naturals has amazing slip, and it's my must have for a co-wash. As I said above the Bee Mine Curling butter! I'm in the process of getting and trying more of their products so stay tuned....

We all have experienced hair challenges at a certain point in this long journey, have you faced any challenges when it comes to styling your hair? How did you overcome them?

In the beginning yes! I did not like the two texture thing with transitioning, it was a pain! Now, I've kinda gotten a good routine going. Learning to be patient and thoughtful with my hair..not rushing, pulling or snagging. TLC goes a long way!
Tell us, what is your favorite hair style? I love wearing my hair wild and free!

What is your "To Go" Style??

My husband loves it like that and also, when I wear my hair in a low, romantic looking ponytail with tendrils framing my face and how can I forget, I love a high bun (pineapple)

At the beginning my daughter was not "in love" with her hair but her feelings have completely changed now, how do you feel about your hair now?

I LOVE IT!!! I hate that it took me this long to wise up! I feel more confident, free..just plain ole me:) Best decision ever!!! Have this HUGE accessory to ROCK now!
I received awful awful hair tips, and I'm glad I didn't follow any of them, tell us, what is the worst tip anyone has ever given you?

To be honest, I haven't gotten any bad tips. I really just do my own thing, and the people around me just love what I do :)

I remember, one of the best tips I ever received was from a stranger at a store, what was the best advise you have been given?

Everyone's hair is different. Learn and listen to what your hair needs. It will tell you. That is so true too I have found. Also finger detangling! Being comb free for a year now!

Some of our readers may or may not know this, but you own a Facebook Fan page under the name of "Korrie's Korner"; what is the main objective of your page, and what inspire you to create it?
My objective is to encourage women to embrace their naturalness and God given beauty. Since I was a teenager I always helped my friends with their hair, make up or skin care needs..just kind of grew from there. I love helping women feel good about themselves! It's my passion:)

Do you have any advice that you would like to share with our readers?

If you're thinking about going natural GO FOR IT! Be patient and to give your hair lots of love. It’s not about whether or not you have “good” hair. We all have good hair! Everyone is different and that is what I love. Be unique. Embrace your “youness”.

Thank you Korrie for this amazing interview, the fabulous tips and the beautiful pictures.  Your hair is beautiful!

Small Business Spotlight: IHN Greeting Cards & IHN Hair Bows!

Hello ladies and gentleman and welcome to our Small Business Spotlight.  This time we are bringing you not just one but two small businesses owned by a lovely couple whom we met a few years ago when they first moved to Savannah, Georgia.

We thank you for wanting to be featured in our Small Business Spotlight. Can you tells us a little bit about yourselves?

Jeremy:  Greetings everyone, we are Carmelita and Jeremy Watson, a married couple of 10 years with 4 small children that range in age from 9 to 2. We are high school sweethearts that met in a Home ED class in 1998 and have yet to stop learning and growing together. We are both Saint Louis, MO natives, we relocated to Savannah, GA a few years back to be closer to the water and further away from family (joking).

Carmelita:  Jeremy works full time as General Manager of a popular Inn while I work full-time as a stay at home mother of four children. The debate of whose job is more difficult rages on!   Our small business was birthed out of a hobby, faith and love. While we wanted success, the sheer accomplishment felt in the follow- through of the process to obtain a business was so very rewarding for us both. We are excited to grow our business and network with others who are also looking to do the same.

Now, these are two very different businesses. What are the names of the businesses?

Jeremy:  The first business, "In His Name," an Inspirational Greeting Card Company, was created October 2012 with IHN Hair Bows being an extension of that business added in May 2013.

Where are your businesses located?

Carmelita:  Believe it or not, with four children, we manage to operate each business out of our home in Savannah, GA.

Wow, managing two businesses with four young children, that is amazing.  Where can we find your products?

Carmelita:  Our Business' Website is www.inhisnamecards.com, but you can also find us on
 Twitter: @inhisnamecards
Pinterest: In His Name Cards & Bows

Jeremy, can you briefly tell us about your business, "In His Name Greeting Cards."

Jeremy: In His Name Greeting Cards offers a steady growing selection of Christian based greeting cards that offer heartfelt messages that highlight their uniqueness. Each greeting card is made from hand, be it a simple embellishment or a photo. We believe the purchasers as well as the recipients will see the heart in each card. The experience in each sentence and the life within the message. Somebody lived these word, be it love or lost, friendship or a simple thank you. These words are our story in one shape or form.

Carmelita, can you briefly tell us about your business, "In His Name Hair Bows."

Carmelita: IHN Hair Bows, like IHN Greeting Cards, was born out of a hobby. I started making hair bows for my two daughters because I found really nice bows to be too expensive. Therefore being a stay at home mom, I was able to do a little research (during the kids nap time, lol) and learn how to make hair bows myself. From there, we showed them to a few moms who were excited about the idea of having well structured, beautiful bows for prices they could afford.

Based on what I have seen so far, it is evident that the two of you enjoy what you are doing.

How did you come to be in this line of work?  At what point did you realize this is what you wanted to do?

Jeremy: Yes, I love it! I have written poetry for years and thought how I could put all these words to use. I literally woke up one morning and looked at my wife and said “By the end of the month, this dream will be reality!” We sat down and wasted card after card trying to get the right look, the right picture, the right message until we had our first seven cards. That was good enough for me, so I started a website, registered our business and the rest is history.

Carmelita: For me, it was the satisfaction I received when making that first bow. It was floppy and I wouldn’t dare sell it, but I was surprised at my ability to create something I saw as beautiful. I thank God for the opportunity to be a stay at home mom because that opened the door for me to have that conversation with myself as to what I can do outside of motherhood, to contribute to my household. So for me, it wasn’t something I have always done, it was a hobby that I got good at with a lot of practice and time.

Both works are master pieces to me. I have read and seen the cards which I believe they are amazing and the message can bring tears of joy and comfort to the recipient.  The bows and headbands are beautiful and Ms Bree is loving her new headbands.

Tell us, what inspires you or where do you get the inspiration to do what you do?

Carmelita: Our daughters inspire us to continue with IHN Hair Bows. My girls love to be dolled up, love to have their hair done up, love the bows and love diving into their collection of bows and picking out one for the day. So wanting that for mothers and daughters is a motivation as well. We have had many moms say that they don’t buy bows because they are too expensive and to have them purchase ours and send us pictures of their daughters in them is inspiration and confirmation that we are on the right path.

Jeremy: Amen to that! To have people celebrate our work is a form of confirmation and assurance that we have made the right decision in pursuing our dreams. To have strangers testify that they have not received a more personal card and that they will keep them as keepsakes is a testament to us that our hard work is not in vain.

How long have you been doing this?

Jeremy: Gosh, I have been writing poetry, short stories and such since I knew how to hold a pen! In His Name, an Inspirational Greeting Card Company was birthed less than a year ago in October 2012.

Carmelita: IHN Hair Bows was created only a few short months ago in May. I have been making bows since about then.

Carmelita, you previously mentioned that you are a stay at home, how do you manage to have time to do your products while caring for three little ones?

Carmelita: Mostly at night, or during naptime during the day. Heck, any time there is quiet, lol!!

Carmelita, who do think would benefit from your product?

Carmelita: Mothers, sisters, aunts or daughters….basically, anyone who is looking for affordable hair bows and not willing to compromise on the look and style. A lot of women out there are just like me, don’t want to buy the cheap bows because they lack style, quality and originality, yet don’t buy the nice one because of the price. IHN Hair bows is the bridge were great quality and affordability meet.

Jeremy, what makes your cards so unique and special?

Jeremy: What makes In His Name Cards unique are the experiences you find in the messages. They are more than words on paper, they are truth to help motivate, encourage and inspire. One of the greatest compliments we received about our greeting cards is that the heart is exposed. What better way to deliver a message than to have your heart exposed to the recipient, therefore, they receive more than the card, they receive the message too.  That is what defines IHN Greeting Cards…the exposure of our hearts and the ability to relate to the message.

As some of you may already know, Fros on the Fourth (a/k/a National Afro Day) is just around the corner!!

Fros on the Fourth was founded by BlkOnyx488 on Long Hair Care Forum in 2010, to encourage naturals to rock out "fro" styles and/or paraphernalia to celebrate the freedom and beauty of natural hair on Independence Day!

Last year Ms. Bree wore her hair out but not an "fro" style:

This is the first year we are participating in "Fros on the Fourth" and she will be rocking her "fro"!   Needless to say her daddy is very excited since "Wash and Go" is his favorite style.

I

I would like to invite all of you to participate and let your little ones rock their "fro" this Fourth of July and we have something very special for those who want to show their support and share their "afrotanstic photos"!

Our friend at BABY BIG HAIR is a big lover of babies with big hair! We are so excited to be partnering with her and doing a Twitter Contest!

Come on and let your Baby Big Hair celebrate this Independence Day a/k/a National Afro Day by proudly displaying his/her BIG HAIR!  Don't forget to take a photo and have it ready to be submitted for our amazing contest.
