Cover Page Beauty: Introducing Korrie Kelley

Hello lovelies...

Welcome to our Cover Page series... Today I am introducing you to an amazing lady who slowly transitioned and is now loving her natural hair! 

Let us begin this wonderful interview, can you tell us your name and which state do you represent?

   My name is Korrie Kelley and I was born and raised in Mississippi!!!

How long has your natural hair been free of relaxers/texturizers or any type of chemicals? Did you transitioned or did you do a Big Chop?

    I started transitioning in June of 2011!
    I was too much of a chicken to do a BC (big chop) so I just started growing out my relaxer, and cutting the relaxed ends every two months. It was so neat to see the curls popping out all over my head! I had no idea what my curl pattern was! It was fun:)



Goodness, look at all that hair, I love the color, tell me Korrie, What made you go back natural?
   

   My cousin did the big chop a few years ago, and watching her hair come to life really inspired me! It changed her also..gave her a certain confidence that she didn't have before. I liked that!

We all know how important it is to establish a routine, what is your routine? how did you come up with it?
   

    Trial and error!!! A lot of Youtube watching and book reading. Kind of gathering different info, and then seeing what worked for me. My wash and go routine is pretty easy. I am a believer in sectioning my hair. I used to free fall it when washing, but the knots and tangles increased so I had to re-evaluate what I was doing. I started out sectioning in the beginning and had to go back to that. I co-wash every 5 days with either Tresseme naturals or As I am coconut co-wash.

    Right now I'm experimenting with several different products for my page, but I do have some favorites that are re-ordered regularly. Kinky Curly knot today is an awesome detangler/leave in, Kinky Curly curling custard is a must for my wash and go's. For sealing I use jojoba or sweet almond oil. I'm loving twist outs right now, and I really think my hair is growing because of it so my musts for those are the Bee Mine Curly Butter!!! IT IS AWESOME!!!!!

I love jojoba oil and it is not secret that I love BEE MINE Natural and Organ Hair products.  Tell us, what products are currently working for you? 

      Tresseme Naturals has amazing slip, and it's my must have for a co-wash. As I said above the Bee Mine Curling butter! I'm in the process of getting and trying more of their products so stay tuned....



We all have experienced hair challenges at a certain point in this long journey, have you faced any challenges when it comes to styling your hair? How did you overcome them?

    In the beginning yes! I did not like the two texture thing with transitioning, it was a pain! Now, I've kinda gotten a good routine going. Learning to be patient and thoughtful with my hair..not rushing, pulling or snagging. TLC goes a long way!

Tell us, what is your favorite hair style? I love wearing my hair wild and free! 



What is your "To Go" Style??
    

     My husband loves it like that and also, when I wear my hair in a low, romantic looking ponytail with tendrils framing my face and how can I forget, I love a high bun (pineapple)



At the beginning my daughter was not "in love" with her hair but her feelings have completely changed now, how do you feel about your hair now?

   I LOVE IT!!! I hate that it took me this long to wise up! I feel more confident, free..just plain ole me:) Best decision ever!!! Have this HUGE accessory to ROCK now!
I received awful awful hair tips, and I'm glad I didn't follow any of them, tell us, what is the worst tip anyone has ever given you?

    To be honest, I haven't gotten any bad tips. I really just do my own thing, and the people around me just love what I do :)




I remember, one of the best tips I ever received was from a stranger at a store, what was the best advise you have been given?

       Everyone's hair is different. Learn and listen to what your hair needs. It will tell you. That is so true too I have found. Also finger detangling! Being comb free for a year now!

Some of our readers may or may not know this, but you own a Facebook Fan page under the name of "Korrie's Korner"; what is the main objective of your page, and what inspire you to create it?

      My objective is to encourage women to embrace their naturalness and God given beauty. Since I was a teenager I always helped my friends with their hair, make up or skin care needs..just kind of grew from there. I love helping women feel good about themselves! It's my passion:)



Do you have any advice that you would like to share with our readers?

If you're thinking about going natural GO FOR IT! Be patient and to give your hair lots of love. It’s not about whether or not you have “good” hair. We all have good hair! Everyone is different and that is what I love. Be unique. Embrace your “youness”.

Princess Cinderella Hairstyle & More

This weekend was a fun weekend for the kids. 

My son's karate instructor had an event called "Halloween Board Breaking" in which all the children got to wear their Halloween costume and break boards by using their punches and kicks.

Lil B. choose to be "Wolverine" and  Ms. Bree choose to be "Cinderella"!

After my son saw "Baby Big Hair" shirt: "It's All Mine Tee",  he asked me not to cut his hair (we will see how long that lasts!).  We did had a little hard time trying to make the face mask fit properly because he has a little "fro" going on.

Here is my baby boy:

Ms. Bree's hairstyle was very simple and easy to do.  

I did a combination of medium size box twists (instead of braids) along her hair line and then combine them into a Bun.  I did not tucked the ends under the bun like I normally would do, instead I decided to leave them out and do little curls at the end by using Kinky Curly Curling Custard.

I only used a bit of Bee Mine Curly Butter on Lil B's hair, unfortunately I believe all the product was left on the mask.  Here are some pictures of Lil B. without his mask:

A Wild Looking Toddler...

As I promised Thursday, this in an update to the "All Natural Curlz" post (http://caramelcurlz.blogspot.com/2012/09/yes-all-natural-curlz.html).  

Are you ready to see this?    First, let me say that Ms. Bree had Art classes at school Thursday and as we all know, paint can be a little messy.

When she was instructed to clean her hands, well... she did more than just clean her hands, she washed her arms, her face and YES, by doing so she got her hair wet!! (which we all knoe is a big NO NO)

Thereafter, she went outside to the playground and when I picked her up from school, her hair was WILD!!

Ms. Bree really enjoyed having her natural curls free and by using Kinky Curly products we accomplished a nice soft look that lasted for more than a day.  I deeply believe that it would have lasted longer if she would not have played with water.

I want to also add that her hair was not tangled at all! In fact, I had very little trouble sectioning the hair in order to get it washed and conditioned.

LESSON:  What I learned is that I cannot send her to school with "free curls".  Next time I'll probably do two pig tails and add the Kinky Curly products to each section.     

Overall, she loved it and had a great time showing people her natural curls, which to me is very important.   I want my daughter to feel comfortable in her own skin, to love herself from head to toes.  Although her style turned "wild", it still looked nice.

YES.. ALL NATURAL CURLZ!!

WOW can you believe a little girl can have this much hair!?

I meant to post this yesterday but since it was my birthday, the day got crazy pretty quickly.    Ms. Bree is finally rocking her natural curls!!.  

I'm so happy I was able to accomplished this!!  It was very simple and it didn't take two hours of styling.  I accomplished this look by using:

1st: Kinky Curly Knot Today to detangle the hair and 
2nd: Kinky Curly Custard to style it.  I made sure the product was evenly distributed it by using my fingers.  

I wish I could have let her entire hair loose, but she didn't feel like having lose hair around her face so as you can on the pictures below, I divided a small section from ear to ear and did a lose braid.

This is the first time I let Ms. Bree go to school with her hair loose so I was a little bit scared of how she was going to look like at the end of the day. 

But I'm happy to say that after an entire day at school plus playground, her hair looked beautiful! So we decided to try for Day #2.!

Before Ms. Bree wen to bed, I carefully grabbed medium size sections and loosely braided the hair (at the end we had about six medium size braids).  Then the satin sleeping cap went on.

DAY 2:

This morning, I carefully removed the braids, lightly sprayed the hair with some water and applied more Kinky Curly Curling Custard to the sections that started to look a little bit frizzy.

AND THIS IS WHAT SHE LOOKS LIKE TODAY!!

Let's see how she will look this evening! So far her hair is not greasy, crunchy or tangled.

LOVE FREE HAIR!!!

This week was definitely busy but it was also very fun.  

Grandparents were visiting and while the boys took a deep see fishing trip, the girls got all dressed up and decided to take a stroll through the downtown area.  Since the kids started school Monday, it was our last opportunity to do fun things with the grandparents.  VACATION is definitely over!

Ms. Bree loves her hair loose and free so i decided to do just that.  The weather was wonderful so I thought, Why not?  

We accomplished this look by using Kinky Curly Curling Custard while her hair was wet and by braiding it.  (To get this look please see my Step by Step instructions Tab.  It is very easy to do!!

We got a lot of compliment and she looked beautiful rocking her curls!

OUR STYLE FOR THIS WEEK!

We decided to do a very simple style for this week, as you can see is a very simple style that any busy mommy can do, it took me approximately 1 hour to 1.15 hrs to do it, but it will probably take less if you don't have to wash and conditioned the hair.  

We originally wanted to add beads at the end of each braid but my "beader" (bead applicator) broke after the first set of beads were applied to her hair so we had to improvise and do finger coils (finger curls) instead, but the result was beautiful.

We are aiming for this style to last for almost two weeks.  Mainly because we are planning to do box braids and beads for grandmother who will be visiting for a week, and every time Grandmother and Papa visit Ms. Bree does NOT like to get her hair done because it takes time away from Grandmother and Papa.

In order to protect Ms. Bree's hairstyles through the night, we use Children's Satin Sleep Cap, which can be found in any hair store for a very reasonable price.  

To keep up with the style daily I would suggest  Kinky Curly Custard to tame the edges and spray any daily spritz you use, I personally use Shea Butter conditioner on the braids and the ends.

INSTRUCTIONS: 

We started by washing her hair with Beautiful Textures Tangle Taming Moisturizing Shampoo, and what I love about this shampoo is that is creamy and I certainly don't have to use a lot of it or keep repeating the process.  I can immediately feel that is cleaning her hair, and the creaminess makes it easier for my fingers to run through her hair and massaging her scalp.

Once I rinsed the shampoo completely out of her hair, I used Herbal Essence "None of your Frizzness", I saturated her hair with the conditioner, parted in half and began detangling that section by using the detangler comb.  Once that section was completely detangled, I made 2 jumbo twist and moved to the other section where I repeated the same detangling process.  I let it sit there for a few minutes then I lightly rinsed it out.

STYLING PROCESS:

Undo the 4 jumbo twists;

I used a combination of Cantu Shea Butter Leave I Conditioner and Coconut Oil mixed 

together and applied it to her soaking wet hair,  

Using a Rat Tail Comb I created a section in the center that began from her forehead to the back of her neck, and added a bit of Kinky Curly Knot today and removed any tangles, then once it was detangled I rubbed a little bit of the Kinky Curly Custard on the palms of my hand and began to cornrow the section;

Then do one big pony tail on each side, I did and used the same products to detangled each section then placed the hair on a pony tail by using Ouchless Scrunchies/Bands.

Each pony tail has 8 small braids (but you can do them as small or as big as you'll like)  I used small rubber bands to hold the ends since I really don't like Ms. Bree to go to bed with accessories. 

Products we used: 

Beautiful Textures Tangle Taming Moisturizing Shampoo; 
Herbal Essence "None of your Frizzness" Conditioner; 
Cantu Shea Butter mixed with a splash of Coconut Oil
Kinky Curly Knot Today; 
Kinky Curly Custard.

Tools & Accessories we used:  
*Combs:   Rat Tail Comb (Metal tail); Tangle Comb 
* Hair clips to separate the hair:  Metal Hair Clips/ Double Prongs Alligator.
*3 Ouchless Bands (one for each pony tail)
*19 to 20 Small rubber bands (you can add beads at the end creating another protective style)
